In 1917, when there was an epidemic of infantile paralysis, I was in great fear for my three children. I then remembered that a friend had told me of Christian Science healings in her family through reading a certain book. The thought came to me that if she was able to keep her family and herself well through the study of some book, the name of which was unknown to me, and if I could obtain that book, all would be well with me and mine.
Knowing that a family nearby was interested in Christian Science, I asked if I might borrow from them the book used by Christian Scientists. Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy was lent me, and I read it in the evenings after the children were asleep. In this textbook, I discovered the pearl of great price, the truth I had been searching for. It answered my every question concerning God, man, and life. As I read Science and Health I found myself saying, "Why, that is what I wanted to believe when I was a child." It seemed as if I were returning to home and harmony after long and unhappy wandering; and as I drew near to God, I felt the presence and nearness of divine Love.
Many faults of thinking were healed, and I found it necessary to see my fellow man and myself as in reality perfect children of perfect God, as never having been involved in a material dream of life. Much joy and inspiration came as I released others and myself from material sense bonds and sought to imbibe purity, humility, and childlike acceptance of good.
