NO ROOM FOR SICKNESS

From the June 1957 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Since God is the only cause and creator, it follows in divine Science that all must be good; and, since God fills all space, there is no room for sickness. The realization of these facts brings health into one's consciousness and also the proof that in true being, God governs all in perfect harmony. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 11), "Health is the consciousness of the unreality of pain and disease; or, rather, the absolute consciousness of harmony and of nothing else."

Two questions arise: How can one gain "the consciousness of the unreality of pain and disease"? and, How can one gain the "consciousness of harmony and of nothing else"? Christian Science teaches that sickness is a mistaken belief, the outgrowth of fearful, ignorant, or sinful thinking, in which pain is merely the acceptance of error as reality. Sickness cannot be handled from the standpoint that it is something to be grappled with, but it must be approached as a lie, as nothing claiming to be something. The scientific and perfect remedy is found in the operation of Truth, the law of God brought to bear upon the problem.

It can be seen, then, that it is unscientific to approach the healing of a diseased person as though he were really sick and then attempt to heal on this basis. But it is scientific to know that it is only a false belief of sickness that needs to be healed. This falsity must be banished in order to make place for the truth to operate and reveal the spiritual, perfect man.
