MANKIND in general know little about the silent mental influences under which they live and act. But Christian Science is alerting its adherents to detect such influences, to accept only good as true, and to reject whatever does not come from God. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p.113): "He who refuses to be influenced by any but the divine Mind, commits his way to God, and rises superior to suggestions from an evil source. Christian Science shows that there is a way of escape from the latter-day ultimatum of evil, through scientific truth; so that all are without excuse."
Christian Science declares that God is the only Mind, and it denies reality or power to the carnal mind, the one evil, which claims to reverse the truth, to produce discord, and to govern mortals. God, Truth, is declaring through Science that man is immortal, the expression of the one Mind, and that he is influenced by Mind alone. Devotion to the fact of the one Mind, one God, makes it possible for us to shut out influences which would impel disobedience to the Ten Commandments and the teachings of Christ Jesus and which would make us sick or poor.
We can readily see that even the moral person is often controlled by the negative beliefs of mortals, which act as laws to his experience until Christian Science shows him how to defend himself against such influences. For instance, consider the widespread silent influence of the theology which asserts that man is material and mortal, an influence which might cause one to act like a mortal and to express the sins and fears and limitations of so-called mortal mind.
