"HAVE SALT IN YOURSELVES"

[Original in German]

From the January 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

FOR centuries men have used salt not only to season their food, but also to preserve or conserve certain foods. In the Old Testament we even find an injunction applying particularly to the use of salt in the Jewish sacrificial rites prescribed by Moses. In Leviticus we read (2:13), "With all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt." This was perhaps to make palatable the offering, part of which the priests were allowed to eat.

Our Master, Christ Jesus, also knew the value of this seasoning, and at times he taught his disciples the spiritual lessons to be learned from it. For instance, he once said (Mark 9:50), "Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it?" Following this question is the Master's emphatic injunction: "Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another."

How much we can profit spiritually by studying this passage in the light of Christian Science! Of what practical help these words can be in our daily lives in preventing our salt from losing its saltness! As we gain the spiritual import of this injunction, we become joyous, more enthusiastic, more consecrated in our efforts to live and prove the great truth which Jesus proclaimed and demonstrated for the salvation of all mankind from sin, disease, and death. Through Mary Baker Eddy's discovery, this truth was made available to all men in Christian Science.
