WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR?

From the January 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

CHRIST JESUS was once asked (Luke 10:29), "Who is my neighbour?" His simple answer contained in the Bible parable of the good Samaritan has set, from that day on, a standard for world brotherhood.

To a Christian, the good Samaritan represents a perfect example of unselfed love in action, for he interrupted his scheduled journey, stopped what he was doing, and without a moment's hesitation came to the side of the injured traveler. He did not waste time arguing with himself: "This man is a stranger. He is not of my nationality. It's none of my business. I'm in a hurry; so let someone else take care of him."

No, the good Samaritan saw someone in need and went to his aid. He gave freely of his love and substance in a most practical way, in the only way the injured man could understand. He bound up his wounds, took him to an inn, and paid for his care. The Bible records that he "shewed mercy on him" (verse 37). To the good and neighborly Samaritan, the unknown man he rescued on the Jericho road was his neighbor.
