GOD DOES NOT AFFLICT

From the February 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

We are informed in the Scriptures that Elihu told Job (37:23), "Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict." And the Psalmist, speaking of the afflictions which sometimes befall the righteous, declares (34:19), "The Lord delivereth him out of them all."

Job was an upright individual, but he was afflicted in body until he gained his healing through a better understanding of God as omnipotent and the source only of perfection. Instead of causing conflict, pain, suffering, inharmony, or disease, God delivers us from them. Christian Science explains how this is done.

Any form of disease or discord is caused by fear or by willful or ignorant neglect of God's law of perfection. When any inharmony appears in one's life, it is a sign to awaken one to an examination of his thoughts and actions. It may seem to the sufferer that God is causing the trouble to test or reform him, but a careful consideration of Biblical passages, such as the ones quoted above, in the light which Christian Science throws upon them will reveal that the errors are not God-sent, but rather are self-inflicted or ignorantly accepted.
