SPIRITUAL FACTS VERSUS MATTER'S CLAIMS

From the February 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For centuries mankind has labored to find that true sense of existence recorded in the Bible (Gen. 1:26): "God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." Fundamentally man, made in God's image and likeness, has never left that state of perfection. It is only because of false education, based upon an ignorance of the spiritual facts, that there seems to be a need to find man's true state again.

But where shall we look? Certainly there is nothing in the realm of matter to approximate the likeness of God. Therefore the man referred to in Genesis must be something entirely different from a limited mortal. So let us turn our search away from the material sense of existence to the spiritual, which is the real and only existence there is.

How shall we do this? Christian Science answers this question by showing its followers how to refuse the claim of separation from God and establish in its place the fact of man's unbroken relationship to Him. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 129), "If you wish to know the spiritual fact, you can discover it by reversing the material fable, be the fable pro or con,—be it in accord with your preconceptions or utterly contrary to them."
