THE WINE OF INSPIRATION

From the February 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In Christian Science we learn that the spiritual wine of our communion cup is the understanding and inspiration of divine Love. It was this inspiration of Love which gave Christ Jesus the strength and courage to endure the earthly sorrows incident to his glorious victory over the mortal claim of death. It was the inspiration of Love which revealed the great and fundamental truth that man in the image and likeness of God is forever whole and free. It was the vision of ever-present, boundless Love, knowing nothing of discord and limitation, that enabled Jesus to heal the sick and raise the dead.

In this consciousness of eternal, limitless Love, the binding, circumscribed restrictions of the old rabbinical faith were broken down and dissolved. Thus the activity of the Christ, the divine idea of God, cleansed human thought of long-entrenched claims of sin, sickness, and death.

In "Miscellaneous Writings," Mary Baker Eddy says (p. 144), "As in the history of a seed, so may our earthly sowing bear fruit that exudes the inspiration of the wine poured into the cup of Christ." May she not have hoped that her followers might be living witnesses to this limitless Love and its unfailing operation?
