A little over twenty years ago I was literally penniless. My home was mortgaged, and I was entirely without income. In this darkest hour a pamphlet published by The Christian Science Publishing Society was given to me. This was entitled "Awake and Inherit," and the first article began with the sentence, "Man has supply because he reflects God."
This arresting and revolutionary statement, like others in the pamphlet, came as a gleam of truth through the darkness of material beliefs and kindled new hope in me. I obtained a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and having read the first chapter, I declared, "Here is the truth!" I emptied all my medicines into the dustbin and from that moment relied absolutely on God for the healing of physical ills and for guidance out of a barren wilderness of lack and limitation.
Within three weeks of beginning the study of Christian Science, I was instantaneously healed of constipation, from which I had suffered for ten years. Our baby was cured of measles overnight by a Christian Science friend, and later on I was able to demonstrate the power of this Science by healing the child of a burned hand within an hour. My financial plight still remained grave, but through the selfless help of a practitioner, the threatened loss of our home never materialized.
