"CHEERFUL YESTERDAYS AND CONFIDENT TO-MORROWS"

From the August 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mankind often find some pretext for murmuring at their lot. Indeed so common is this tendency that it would appear almost an inborn propensity to regard imperfection as complementary to existence.

Today the standard of living in certain countries has been raised to a level which enables a large number of people to enjoy a comfortable home, good food, pleasure, and an assured income for the future. Is there dissatisfaction among these people? Unfortunately there is. Complaints are still vocal. Imagination constantly conjures up fresh grounds for discontent, indicating that complete satisfaction is not contingent upon or obtainable from material things.

Whilst good circumstances are desirable and the ideal of a progressive people, they should not be regarded as an end in themselves, or as the sole harbingers of happiness, for reliance upon material props must sooner or later end in disappointment.
