SPIRITUAL MATHEMATICS

From the April 1960 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In this nuclear and space-minded age, the science of mathematics and other material sciences are being emphasized by many as presenting the solution to individual and world problems. Material sciences have a necessary place in human experience and, if used for good, can be a means for advancement of the human race. However, the only real and permanent solution to mankind's problems lies in the understanding and application of the spiritual truths taught and demonstrated by Christ Jesus, the Principle and specific rules of which have been revealed to this age by the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy.

Under the marginal heading "The spiritual mathematics" on page 3 of Science and Health, our Leader writes: "Who would stand before a blackboard, and pray the principle of mathematics to solve the problem? The rule is already established, and it is our task to work out the solution. Shall we ask the divine Principle of all goodness to do His own work? His work is done, and we have only to avail ourselves of God's rule in order to receive His blessing, which enables us to work out our own salvation."

To gain a workable understanding of mathematical laws, one must first learn the principle and rules governing the science of numbers and their relationship to each other. Next in the orderly procedure of solving a specific problem would be the application of what one has learned; then, to be sure that one understands the principle involved, one must prove his answer to be correct.
