"THE ALCHEMY OF SPIRIT"

From the April 1960 issue of The Christian Science Journal

On page 422 of Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy writes: "As when an acid and alkali meet and bring out a third quality, so mental and moral chemistry changes the material base of thought, giving more spirituality to consciousness and causing it to depend less on material evidence. These changes which go on in mortal mind serve to reconstruct the body. Thus Christian Science, by the alchemy of Spirit, destroys sin and death."

One definition of "alchemy" is "power to transform, or act or process of transforming, something common into something precious." This definition could apply to the spiritual transformation of thought.

Referring to the two great characters, Christ Jesus and Paul, Mrs. Eddy says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 360), "Theirs were modes of mind cast in the moulds of Christian Science: Paul's, by the supremely natural transforming power of Truth; and the character of Jesus, by his original scientific sonship with God." We can readily see that Jesus' divine origin enabled him, more easily than all others, to demonstrate spiritual being. But all who truly desire to feel the divinely "natural transforming power of Truth," or "the alchemy of Spirit," will find their lives enriched and changed thereby into ones of spiritual helpfulness to humanity.
