Evidence of the natural inclination to trust in Deity is indicated by the national motto now inscribed on coins and in increasing degree on paper currency of the United States, "In God we trust." To some, the motto may signify a mere hope that He will help us. To others, it bespeaks a deep and earnest faith in His willingness to aid our righteous actions.
Let us examine ourselves. How sincere is our trust in God? Are we willing to forsake material remedies and to trust God, good, alone for healing? This is a requirement of Christian Science, and when it is obeyed, evidence of that trust appears in our lives. Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (p. 234), "If we trust matter, we distrust Spirit."
New seekers for the truth may demand evidence of God's power in their lives. They may say, "I will not believe unless I am healed." Christ Jesus sensed a doubt in the mind of the nobleman, whose appeal was made on behalf of his son, who, he said, was dying. Jesus responded (John 4:48), "Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe." But the man, in apparent desperation, cried out, "Come down ere my child die." The Master, then, without going to the house of the nobleman gave him proof of God's power by restoring the son to health.
