Students of Christian Science sometimes find themselves confronted with evil suggestions which interfere with their spiritual progress by keeping them from fully supporting the Cause of Christian Science. These suggestions take many forms, and one of the most subtle, and therefore one especially to be guarded against, is the suggestion that offers a reason for not subscribing to one or more of the authorized periodicals, which are organs of The Mother Church.
Lying suggestions may seem to be reasonable, such as these: there is no time to read the periodicals, and it is not necessary for individual growth to subscribe to them. It may be that when two church members live together, they consider one subscription enough. In the case of The Christian Science Monitor, the lie may be that the local newspaper provides the essential news.
Article VIII, Section 14, of the Church Manual by Mrs. Eddy reads, "It shall be the privilege and duty of every member, who can afford it, to subscribe for the periodicals which are the organs of this Church; and it shall be the duty of the Directors to see that these periodicals are ably edited and kept abreast of the times."
