Mankind works best when a definite goal lies ahead, for it gives an impetus to every thought and act. As Christian Scientists we may well ask: "Just what is my goal? What am I working for?" Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, has described this goal in one sentence. On page 428 of Science and Health, she says, "To divest thought of false trusts and material evidences in order that the spiritual facts of being may appear, —this is the great attainment by means of which we shall sweep away the false and give place to the true."
If we are to accomplish this "great attainment," there is work to be done. We must divest our thoughts of everything we know to be untrue, deny its false evidence, and strip it of any claim to reality. Perhaps we have been leaning on some medical preparation for strength or health. When we learn in Christian Science that God is our health and strength, we joyously realize that no other remedy is necessary. The Christian Science periodicals publish many testimonies from grateful people who have found this to be true. And attendance at Wednesday testimony meetings in a Church of Christ, Scientist, or a Christian Science Society will provide convincing evidence of freedom gained from bondage to various claims of evil, including addiction to drugs, slavery to alcoholic beverages, dependence on coffee, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, and other material props.
The individual who is alert to his blessed relationship to God as His spiritual reflection needs no stimulant. The thought gratefully at rest in God's love needs no sleeping pill. The peace that comes as one dwells in the consciousness of God's tender care will of itself take care of the human need of rest and sleep.
