Christian Science first came to my attention when I was thirteen. Mother sent my brother, two sisters, and me to the Christian Science Sunday School, for, as she said, "It is close by, and the training will be good for all of you." During the one and a half years that I attended the Sunday School, the truth that God is infinite divine Love was taught to me, and in my teen-age years many remarkable incidents of divine guidance and protection were experienced through faith in this new concept of our heavenly Father. But as yet I did not realize that an understanding of God heals sickness.
Soon after my marriage I was stricken with inflammation of the bladder, which was diagnosed by a physician as cystitis. I had always been physically healthy and felt this would just go away if given time. It soon became evident, however, that help was needed. My wife was not yet acquainted with Christian Science, and she was deeply concerned about the discordant physical evidence. One day we finally decided to follow the doctor's advice that I should report to the hospital. I spoke to the doctor, who said he would send medicines to help me through the night and would begin medical treatment at the hospital the next morning.
At this point my sister recommended that we turn to Christian Science for healing. This awakened me to look to God for help. Before the medicines arrived I made an appointment to visit a Christian Science practitioner. She talked to me about my real being as an idea in God's perfect creation and asked me to study the statement in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 463), "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive." While the practitioner prayed for me, a clearer understanding of God and of man was established in my consciousness.
