CHRISTMAS: ITS SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE

From the December 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Christmas season comes and goes. The emotions and enthusiasms it engenders lift us up and then let us down. But when the spiritual significance of Christmas is active in our hearts day in and day out, our thoughts keep mounting, our vision remains clear, and Christmas becomes a continuing spiritual experience.

The birth of Jesus has had a profound influence on a large segment of humanity, and so has his resurrection. With the discovery of Christian Science by Mrs. Eddy, the significance of his coming and of his going is better understood. The value of what he said concerning himself and what he accomplished is being immeasurably increased.

The limited spiritual discernment even of his disciples made it necessary for Jesus to make frequent use of symbols. For instance, in the sixth chapter of John he referred to himself as "the bread of life." He also said, "I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever." Again he said, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." Many were unable to adjust themselves to such statements and turned away.
