Testimonies of Healing

As a girl and young woman I often had...

From the November 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As a girl and young woman I often had a great longing for something, I knew not what; but I thought it was for good health, since before I was twenty-five years of age I had had two surgical operations and was also taking drugs for neurasthenia and acute depression. For many years I lived in almost daily fear of losing my reason. I also wore a surgical belt for a serious kidney condition.

One day, when talking to a friend, I said to her that I could not understand why God permitted such suffering, and she then mentioned that she had a book which she thought would help me. That book was Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I borrowed the book and read and studied it every available moment for several days. One night when I retired, everything seemed illumined, and I realized that I had touched the hem of Christ's garment. I was healed at that moment of the neurasthenia and depression.

The following morning, on looking at the surgical belt, I began to laugh and knew that the prophecy of Isaiah which reads (40:31), "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint," was a living promise for all time. I had no need to wear the belt again, for the kidney condition was corrected. These healings, which took place over forty years ago, have been permanent and have enabled me to comprehend "the Life that maketh all things new" (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 218).
