I am ever more grateful for having been reared as a Christian Scientist. It is a happy privilege to be able to put the scientific understanding of being to practical use every day and to be able to share the wonderful truths of God and man with our children and also with a teen-age Sunday School class.
For a few years after leaving the Christian Science Sunday School at the age of twenty, I became lazy about the daily study of the Bible and of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I did not doubt Mrs. Eddy's God-appointed mission as the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, nor that Science is the law of God and the only true healing power; but I felt that my prayers on behalf of the world would not be missed and that no great loss would occur if I applied myself only to my household duties for the time being. Actually, it was my mental household that needed tending; and it is a great loss if even one individual is not living up to the highest standard he knows.
Our baby daughter began to suffer from painful earache. For family reasons a neighborhood doctor was called in. He predicted that the child would be deaf in the affected ear if she did not have medical attention immediately. Hearing this prediction was like having a bucket of cold water thrown in my face. I saw clearly the folly of drifting and being lulled by the suggestion that daily communion with God is not necessary. I thanked the doctor and dismissed him and then called a Christian Science practitioner.
