True progress comes as the Science of Christ enables human consciousness to distinguish between that which is true and of God and that which is true and of God and that which is false and not of God. Mrs. Eddy makes the importance of this step clear when she writes in Science and Health (p. 466): "Truth is intelligent; error is non-intelligent. Moreover, Truth is real, and error is unreal. This last statement contains the point you will most reluctantly admit, although first and last it is the most important to understand."
This most important point—"Truth is real, and error is unreal"—is understood in the degree that we comprehend the fact that God is supreme. When we realize that the reality of manhood is with God, Truth, we see the unreality of what appear to be personalities involved in erroneous beliefs. We gain an understanding of Truth and of man's uninterrupted harmony as we study the Bible and the Christian Science textbook and then in our daily lives demonstrate what we learn.
Our experience is the result of our Thinking. As we accept good to be the only law governing our lives, we gain a greater sense of harmony. Mankind generally accept error more readily than Truth because their opinions are formed from the evidence of the physical senses. As we understand that Truth is infinite and that there is no separation between God and man and know that the physical senses cannot truthfully suggest otherwise, we can live according to what is spiritually true and reject any erroneous suggestions, regardless of what they may present. Our Leader writes, "By lifting thought above error, or disease, and contending persistently for truth, you destroy error" (Science and Health, p. 400).
