What a wonderful thing it is to know that man is made in God's own image, that he is absolutely pure and sinless, yes, incapable of sin because he reflects only the qualities of God, his creator! We read in the Scriptures (Job 33:4), "The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life."
One of the synonyms Mrs. Eddy gives for God is Soul, and throughout her writings she shows that Soul, being God, is sinless; that true being expresses the sinlessness, purity, beauty, and joy of Soul. Man, made in the likeness of God, must therefore reflect these qualities of Soul in all their radiance and perfection, and the substance of man must be the substance of Soul.
Such being man's origin and nature, how can he change his spiritual status and become the slave of material sense? He cannot, and Christian Science has come, with deep compassion and ineffable tenderness, to show mortals the way out of this seeming enslavement. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 272), "It is the spiritualization of thought and Christianization of daily life, in contrast with the results of the ghastly farse of material existence; it is chastity and purity, in contrast with the downward tendencies and earthward gravitation of sensualism and impurity, which really attest the divine origin and operation of Christian Science."
