When Christian Science was presented to me over twenty-seven years ago I had been burdened for some years with a form of enterocolitis, which a surgeon finally said he was unable to cure. At this juncture, I received the news of the healing of an aunt, who had suffered from asthma for twenty-five years. She was gravely ill when the reading of the first pages of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and the help of a consecrated Christian Science practitioner brought about her almost instantaneous healing.
Although I was skeptical, I had to accept the striking evidence of this complete healing. I asked immediately for Science and Health, began to read it at once, and continued to read with enthusiasm. From the beginning, I realized that I had found in absolute metaphysics the synthesis of Science and religion and also the answer to the problem of human life and destiny which had haunted me since youth. I accepted its teachings from the first, and from that moment did away with medicines. Chronic constipation, from which I had suffered, was immediately healed, and after about six months, with the help of the practitioner mentioned, the enterocolitis disappeared. Christian Science has since been the only medicine in my family.
With the exception of medical inspections and vaccinations, which were obligatory under the law, none of our three children, of whom the youngest is twenty, has ever had medical treatment. Illnesses, including impetigo, sinus trouble, grippe, measles, mumps, osteomyelitis, pyorrhea, tonsillitis, erysipelas, neuritis, bronchitis, and convulsions, have yielded, some to our own application of Truth, some with the aid of treatment given by a practitioner. During the bombings in the Second World War and the occupation of our country, we had many proofs of God's protecting power.
