"WRITTEN IN HEAVEN"

From the December 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When the seventy disciples whom Jesus sent forth to preach and heal returned, rejoicing that the devils were subject to them, Jesus assured them that they had divine power over the enemy in any form and that nothing would hurt them. Then he admonished them (Luke 10:20), "Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven."

Jesus knew that human rejoicing over healing might well imply the reality of devils as something to be destroyed and might lead to the conceit that a human being had accomplished the healing. Therein lies the concept of dualism, of a power opposed to God and of mortal man as a creator.

Rejoicing that our "names are written in heaven" eliminates evil opposition by establishing in our consciousness the truth that man's name or nature is eternally perfect, harmonious, because he is the image and likeness of the one creator, God. As such he expresses the God-power, which is the source of all action. The Master said (John 5:30), "I can of mine own self do nothing ... I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me."
