Christian Science came into my life when I was a girl in my teens. I was in a very weakened condition, for I had been suffering from asthma for some time and physicians had said they could do no more for me. Then my mother heard about Christian Science and made an appointment for me to see a practitioner, who talked to me of God's love for all His children. She assured me that since this condition was not good, God had not made it and did not know it. Therefore it did not belong to me, for I had been made in His own image and likeness.
In explaining these truths to me, the practitioner referred to some statements from the first chapter of Genesis: "God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him," and, "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." I was asked to study and memorize Mary Baker Eddy's answer to the question, "What is God?" It is found on page 465 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and reads as follows: "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." When I told the practitioner of the difficulty I had in sleeping at night, she asked me to learn this verse from Proverbs (3:24): "When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet."
My mother must have had great expectancy of healing, for that night she took away the extra pillows I had used under my head, and the candle that had been burned in my room upon the advice of physicians. I slept soundly all night, my strength returned, and within one week I was completely free.
