I am a teacher, and one day as I was joining my children on the playground I inadvertently walked into a low-hanging branch of a tree. The pointed branch penetrated my eye. I immediately turned to God for help and found myself audibly declaring, "Nothing can touch or injure my true being, for I am a spiritual idea of God." I acknowledged that God is my creator and that man is made in His image and likeness, perfect and free. I walked into the building and asked my supervisor to stand by until I felt free to rejoin the children. This she did, and being a Christian Scientist she lovingly supported me with statements of truth.
I continued my work of joyously identifying myself as a child of God, subject only to the laws of God, for God alone governs man. I declared that God is good, and that I could not be separated from the law of good by accident or for any other reason. Passages from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy came to my thought. One reads (p. 481), "God's being is infinity, freedom, harmony, and boundless bliss." And another is (p. 470), "Man is the expression of God's being."
Then, I reasoned, if I believe that this is true of me—that in reality I am the perfect expression of God's being—I am free right now, for nothing has happened to my true being. Steadfastly maintaining that God's work is always complete and that there is no law or power to reverse God's law, I rejoined the children and a visiting mother, who was totally unaware of any discord. The eye was normal. I am grateful that my thought was so uplifted that I did not have at any time a desire to look at the eye.
