THE CERTAINTY OF MIND-HEALING

From the May 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

NO one wants to be sick. Everyone who is sick desires to be healed. Humanity has turned from one material remedy to another, often to find health and harmony illusive, temporary, or unattainable. Many have found themselves questioning with the prophet (Jer. 8:22): "Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?"

Although a few spiritually-minded individuals had glimpsed the true source of healing, it was not until the appearing of Christ Jesus that the world witnessed proof of the certainty of Mind-healing. Since Jesus used no material remedies, there must have been a good reason for his not doing so. The world's greatest physician, he did not use or recommend drugs; yet he healed leprosy as well as insanity, raised people from the dead, and resurrected himself from the tomb. Nor did he use medicine, surgery, or hygiene to accomplish these healings. The Master knew that man is spiritual and reflects God, divine Mind, and that a change in human consciousness regarding man brings a change in material evidence. Paul was referring to the latter truth when he said (Rom. 12:2), "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind."

Under the marginal heading "Modes of matter," in the textbook (pp. 169, 170), Mrs. Eddy, leaving no doubt about the healing efficacy of divine Mind, writes: "The good that a poisonous drug seems to do is evil, for it robs man of reliance on God, omnipotent Mind, and according to belief, poisons the human system. Truth is not the basis of theogony. Modes of matter form neither a moral nor a spiritual system. The discord which calls for material methods is the result of the exercise of faith in material modes,—faith in matter instead of in Spirit."
