Shortly before World War II, while on holiday at the seaside, I was introduced to Christian Science by a friend whose daily life I greatly admired. On returning to London, I sought out a Christian Science Sunday School and had the blessing of its teachings for two years before attaining the necessary leaving age.
During World War II the Air Ministry notified me that someone very dear to me had been killed. His aircraft had been shot down in flames. Three weeks after this, the Air Ministry notified my family that another one dear to us was missing. It was later established that his life had been lost when his plane had come down in the estuary of a river.
Because of these events I was grief-stricken for a year and a half, and not even my dearest relatives could do anything to help me. At this time I was serving in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. After peace came and I was demobilized, I went to see a Christian Science practitioner, who had been my Sunday School teacher.
