ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIP

From the August 1964 issue of The Christian Science Journal

TODAY human thought is being urged by history's events to move in worldwide throughways of experience. It must forsake the more sheltered roads of personal and local evaluation of affairs and scan the present and future of the family of man from the higher plateau of spiritual understanding. From this elevation the unfoldment of divine purpose becomes clearer. Together with many activities which indicate the growing awareness of unity among mankind the Christian Science movement is contributing to universal harmony. Every facet of its functioning is intended by its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy, to serve the whole world as well as the individual need.

An important part of this great work is the Christian Scientist associations provided for in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy (see Art. XXVI, Sect. 6). These groups are composed of members taught by trained and accredited teachers. Such instructors use the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy in their work. As our Leader writes in the Manual (Art. XXVII, Sect. 5), "Teachers of Christian Science must have the necessary moral and spiritual qualifications to elucidate the Principle and rule of Christian Science, through the higher meaning of the Scriptures."

This By-Law is a link that unites all association members as students of the same teaching: divine Truth. Wherever a Christian Scientist association gathers, although it is known as a particular assemblage, it is not an isolated one. It cannot be at variance with any similar group, nor should it be a weak link in the chain of this spiritual activity around the world but rather a vital part of the movement of Christian Science.
