I began to attend the Sunday School of a Church of Christ, Scientist, with a friend while I was in my teens, and within a short while my family began to notice a difference in my character, expressed in less selfishness and a better temper. I shall always be grateful to the two teachers I had while in Sunday School. Both were consecrated practitioners and went far beyond the call of duty in helping those in their classes to gain a better understanding of Christian Science. At this time other members of my family became more regular in their attendance at this branch church and eventually joined it.
Several years later I was confronted with a problem which forced me to use all that I had learned in Sunday School and to gain even more understanding. I had always wanted to be a fashion designer, but I lived in an area of the country which had no fashion market and offered no training of this type.
Shortly after my marriage the way opened for me to obtain exactly the training I needed and to complete my college education at the same time. Then my husband's work took him to another city, and I was again in a city in which there seemed to be no opportunity to use my training. I made every human effort to find something even remotely connected with fashion work. I tried one or two positions, but they were not satisfactory. I became greatly frustrated and unhappy. It seemed unfair and disappointing to me not to be able to continue my career, and yet I knew that to ask my husband to change his position would not be right.
