SPIRIT, God, the Principle of all being, answers prayer through law. This divine law is unvarying. Christian Science explains that the law of Principle is spiritual, not material. The divine Mind is conscious of spiritual reality but not of matter. Prayer which asks for material things or for adjustments of material circumstances asks Spirit to do the impossible: to recognize its opposite, matter. Since Spirit is All, there is no matter.
There is no materially personal, corporeal God listening to our prayers. God is infinite, incorporeal Love, the spiritually conscious Father-Mother, the one Ego, or infinite Person. Man is the image, or idea, of this one infinite Principle. Divine law maintains each idea as distinct and individual, each expressing in his own individual way the intelligence and health of the Father-Mother.
On page 7 of Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy says: "God is not influenced by man. The 'divine ear' is not an auditory nerve. It is the all-hearing and all-knowing Mind, to whom each need of man is always known and by whom it will be supplied." Christ Jesus said (Matt. 6:8), "Your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him."
