Jesus caused Nicodemus to wonder when he said (John 3:3), "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." Christian Science healing is one manifestation of man's spiritual rebirth. I came to understand and believe in Mary Baker Eddy's scientific interpretation of the Scriptures and particularly of the source of Jesus' power to heal only after my own healing from a malady which even today the medical profession accepts as incurable.
Shortly after my marriage I started having recurring attacks of epilepsy. The frequency increased, and I was in danger of losing my job. I submitted to various treatments, all to no avail. All through this, my wife, for whom the suffering was equally intense, kept recommending that we seek help through Christian Science treatment. She as a child had been healed of jaundice and other ailments through the help in Science of her aunts and was convinced that it would help. I resisted, but then agreed to seek the help of a practitioner in another city.
Treatment was given me by her, and she consistently encouraged me through letters to deepen my awareness of God. My attitude, however, was one of, "I'll do my part (read the references), you do yours (heal me)." No healing could be wrought in this way.
