Many of us have had the experience in childhood of being roused from a disturbing dream by the demands of our mother or father to wake up. Unselfish affection expressed in human parenthood stems from God, divine Love, our ever-present Father-Mother. Just as it is love that impels the human parent to waken his child from a bad dream, so it is God, divine Love, that wakens individuals from the mortal dream of life in matter. God does this, not because He knows evil, but because it is the nature of Love as Father-Mother to assert this power.
The parent who wakens the dreaming child does so not because the dream is real to him but because he knows that the dream is unreal and that the child is all right and should be awake to the fact. It is because of Love's allness and ever-present peace and security that the individual who is dreaming of life in matter can be roused to see that man, God's image, is actually spiritual, undisturbed, happy, safe, and wholly satisfied.
One of Job's friends, Eliphaz, caused him to have bad dreams. Job said to him, "When I say, My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall ease my complaint; then thou scarest me with dreams, and terrifiest me through visions: so that my soul chooseth strangling, and death rather than my life."Job 7:13–15; Job eventually learned that he need not suffer and be tormented by dreams or dream perpetrators. Elihu, a more Christly type of friend, revealed to him: "Far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity. . . . For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings."2
