Our Goal and the Way to It

From the September 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One of his disciples said to Christ Jesus, "Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?" He replied: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. ... I go unto my Father."John 14:5, 6, 12;

Mrs. Eddy explains, "When the Life that is God, good, shall appear, 'we shall be like Him;' we shall do the works of Christ, and, in the words of David, 'the stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner,' because the I does go unto the Father, the ego does arise to spiritual recognition of being, and is exalted,—not through death, but Life, God understood."Miscellaneous Writings, p. 196;

The Christian's goal is life in Spirit, and to reach it, we must follow the Master in the Christly way. Our destination is the recognition of true being, the acceptance and demonstration of God's reign of harmony going on everywhere. Where we now are is partly a false state of consciousness, an illusion, or dream. But through our study and practice of Christian Science we can move out of this false sense. To progress humanly is to accept as real the state in which we already are spiritually. Our destination is reality, and the way to reach it is to wake up from the dream of a mortal journey. Reality is the divine state of consciousness, the heaven of Soul, which is already and has always been the only true sense of things. We find reality in proportion as we replace unreal beliefs with spiritual facts. Christliness, expressed as meekness, purity, unselfishness, must lead us away from the egotism, materiality, and self-will that keep us bounded by a false sense of self.
