"The specific term for error"

From the September 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy gives this statement: "As named in Christian Science, animal magnetism or hypnotism is the specific term for error, or mortal mind. It is the false belief that mind is in matter, and is both evil and good; that evil is as real as good and more powerful."Science and Health, p. 103;

The uncovering and destruction of animal magnetism is a vital part of Jesus' teachings. His parable of the sower depicts the mechanism of the human mind. He stressed the great importance of understanding this subject when he said, "Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables?"Mark 4:13;

From a metaphysical viewpoint, the great Teacher was speaking to the multitudes about different mentalities where the seed of Truth is sown. A few people remained with his disciples to learn the meaning of the parable. He no longer spoke in code. He said that the seed—"the word"—is stolen away by Satan, or animal magnetism. He told them specifically why the seed does not take root and bear fruit: "The cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful."v. 19;
