"Radical reliance on Truth"

From the September 1966 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In some countries government assistance is free to the elderly who need hospital care because of illness or because of the inroads of the belief of old age. This assistance is a humane measure. Often the citizens in this category have no one to care for them in their homes, their incomes are depleted because of retirement from employment, and their contemporaries, who would be more likely than anyone else to be interested and helpful, have passed on. Furthermore, such patients are in general accustomed to relying upon medical means for help.

But students of Christian Science are accustomed to relying upon God for healing, and they know that no situation is too difficult for Him. They know that divine law restores health and prevents deterioration. What they often need, however, is the stronger faith and the deeper humility that inspire them to place full reliance upon spiritual truth, the law of God. This reliance destroys fear and opens the door of thought to a clearer sense of the heaven which is within every child of God—a mental state in which divine law controls all.

Christ Jesus taught and exemplified radical reliance upon God. To a woman whom he healed after she "had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any," Jesus said, "Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace."Luke 8:43, 48; The Saviour knew the effect of turning from material to spiritual means for healing. He had full confidence in the ability of God to care for every need of those who worship Him with faith and in the spirit of Truth.
