A Standard of Excellence in Music

From the April 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For many people music is the human phenomenon which comes closest to representing spiritual substance. A Christian Scientist can see that his understanding of spiritual reality is the perfect starting point for an understanding of good music; and one who loves music will gain a deeper understanding of it as he learns more of the truth of spiritual reality.

Mrs. Eddy says, "Music is the harmony of being; but the music of Soul affords the only strains that thrill the chords of feeling and awaken the heart's harpstrings."Miscellaneous Writings, p. 106; On this basis rests the right and natural support of the music in a Christian Science church.

Christian Scientists who are responsible for the music in their churches will want to be well informed about both the classical and the rapidly appearing new forms and attitudes in music while also proving that a radical dependence on Mind, Soul, inspires them to provide what is the best music for their churches. This can be no mean undertaking and one in which very few members will be directly involved. But the pure, Christlike thinking of every individual church member who realizes that the one Mind, God, is governing every aspect of church activity will help the musicians (whether they are Christian Scientists or not) and those on the music committee to make a higher demonstration of Soul's impersonal ability.
