Praying for the Church

From the April 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The centennial of the discovery of Christian Science by Mrs. Eddy may prompt her followers to ask what they can do to strengthen the impact of this centennial on our Cause and thus to help all mankind. The answer might well be that they can improve their daily prayers for the Church which she founded. Through this Church more and more of mankind learn of the true nature of God and His spiritual creation and are thus inspired to live in accord with the teachings of Christ Jesus.

What a broad outlook on church activity we get through studying the experiences of the Master! His Church was always with him. He taught and healed in the synagogues, in the wilderness, in houses, and by the wayside; and so he practiced true religion. In his interview with a Samaritan woman at Jacob's well he said, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."John 4:24;

At another time Jesus asked his disciples, "Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?"Matt. 16:13-16; After their answer he said, "But whom say ye that I am?" Then came the quick reply from Peter, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." The awareness of God as sovereign Spirit brought forth Peter's confession of faith in the Master's demonstration of Christ, Truth. And from Jesus' commendation of Peter's answer we learn that Christ Jesus intended to found his Church on the supremacy of spiritual ideas over material beliefs. Any church which follows his example must teach people the nearness to God which leads to a spiritual and truthful worship.
