Church In Action

The art of communication

From the April 1967 issue of The Christian Science Journal

There had already been a marked trend for churches to move their Reading Rooms out of the church edifice into the core of community activity to conspicuous ground floor locations assured of maximum foot traffic. This trend continues to gather momentum.

There is also a move to dress up display windows, to feature well-advertised open-shelf lending libraries, and otherwise to promote more active use of Reading Rooms by the inquiring public, as well as more solid support of them by Christian Scientists themselves.

Twelve Field Promotion Representatives, previously concerned only with helping branch churches with their Christian Science Monitor circulation and advertising work, are now devoting a fourth of their time to assisting Reading Room librarians to perk up their window displays. Since they will be making the rounds of all Reading Rooms in their areas one to five times each year, they will be in a position to share with librarians any good, practical idea being put to use by Reading Room librarians elsewhere.
