Church in Action

Resolutions for a better world

From the March 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

We, students of Christian Science, affirm our dedication and devotion to the two great Biblical commandments stated by Christ Jesus and to their ageless freshness in our lives. We further affirm that these commandments are a modern and radically perceptive basis from which every individual can rise from a merely theoretical to a practical Christianity.

Jesus said: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself" (Matt. 22:37-39). We attempt to follow these commandments, and we hereby affirm:

1. International strife is alleviated by peace and love, which must grow from within ourselves . . . promoting the brotherhood of all mankind. Such an attitude . . . will be an active force in destroying the kind of strife exemplified by the war in Vietnam. . . . The conviction that all men are the children of God, who is infinite Love, destroys fear of historic hate and national inferiority and awakens men's respect for law and for each other.
