Our Duty

From the March 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

During a course in world affairs at a college in the United States, ambassadors and representatives of many of the new nations of the world presented by invitation the story of their country's resources, capabilities, outlooks, needs, and aspirations. The basic desire expressed was deeply arousing. In no case did any of the representatives express a desire for material benefits. Perhaps in the societies of their native lands such a desire was taken for granted. However that may be, these envoys stated desires that were almost identical and always twofold. First, they sought know how, enlightenment, understanding, in order to work out the problems of their nations' destinies. Secondly, they earnestly sought to be recognized, esteemed, and accepted on a plane of equality with the United States.

The fact was that these proud representatives were seeking help in the land where Christian Science had been discovered and founded for the benefit of all mankind.

In December, 1897, the Leader of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy, wrote to her followers assembled at a Sunday service in her immediate neighborhood: "I shall be with you personally very seldom. I have a work to do that, in the words of our Master, 'ye know not of.' From the interior of Africa to the utmost parts of the earth, the sick and the heavenly homesick or hungry hearts are calling on me for help, and I am helping them."The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 147;
