I am very grateful that early in my life in Japan my mother saw to it that I was taught something of Christian Science. When an experienced Christian Scientist told me that I was a child of God foremost, rather than of a nationality, I was taken by surprise; but more and more as years go along I see the endless benefit of learning to accept the spiritual truth of myself as the child of one Father-Mother Mind. Indeed, I feel that it has been a wonderful privilege to learn God as taught in Christian Science, especially as I am living in a land where the truth of one infinite God is little known. In this relation, I would like to pay tribute to the intelligence and courage of my grandmother, who took up the study of Christian Science when it was entirely new in Japan.
The Christian Science Sunday School was started in Tokyo when I was in high school, and I am grateful for the earnest efforts of the handful of Christian Scientists who made Sunday School experience possible to me and others.
Because of a language barrier, however, it was not until my college years in the United States that I really began to study Christian Science. I count it among the greatest blessings in my life that during those years I had the privilege of class instruction from a consecrated and understanding teacher of Christian Science. Through this privilege I was protected from having to experience the Second World War in Japan, where I might have undergone many hardships. Instead I spent constructive, profitable years of progress in the United States. This wonderful protection and guidance came through the following incident.
