I feel a deep desire and duty to share with others what Christian Science has meant in my life over the past twenty years. During this time Christian Science has been my only physician, and Mind has been my only medicine. Every aspect of my thought and experience has felt a salutary influence as I have continued to work to change my base of thought from the material to the spiritual.
At the time I found Christian Science, I had been looking for a number of years for something that would answer my questions about the Bible, Christianity, and the meaning of life. Sometime during these years, my mother—at considerable sacrifice—gave me a beautiful, white-backed Bible. I treasure it as a symbol of her love and for the beauty of the book itself.
I knew that the Bible is highly regarded by scholars for its literary and poetic passages. I was an omnivorous reader and enjoyed literature and poetry. I often read the Bible in an attempt to escape the periods of severe depression and hopelessness which seemed to engulf me. Then I made a most interesting discovery. When I read passages from the book of Psalms during times of depression, I soon felt greatly comforted and uplifted. I took this Bible with me into military service in World War II and had it with me through nearly five years of active duty and through three campaigns in two different theaters of operations. In Psalms, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes I found, during this time of hardship and danger, much beauty, solace, and inspiration.
