Church in Action

Church in Action

From the July 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Let's say you have just moved to a new community or a new country. You love church very much, but there is no branch Church of Christ, Scientist, anywhere for miles around, and no other Christian Scientists, either, as far as you can determine. And you certainly do miss church!

Now what? Roughly, you have three choices. You can move to another city or country where Christian Science churches are already established, sit around and tell yourself over and over again how badly you miss church, or decide to hold Christian Science services yourself, undaunted by the empty chairs in your living room.

A Christian Scientist who moved from the United States to a Latin-American community chose the latter alternative. What is unusual about this story is not that she began holding Christian Science services in her home when there was not a trace of interest from others in the community (other Christian Science churches have begun this way) but that she did so for one entire year.
