As a young woman I had a great longing to know more about God. I was a member of an orthodox church, which I attended regularly. I visited many churches of other denominations seeking a clearer understanding of God. One happy day a friend lent me a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. While reading the first chapter on Prayer, my whole consciousness became illumined. Here was the truth of being for which I had searched. I took up the study of Christian Science immediately, and words cannot describe the transformation in my thinking and living that followed.
An early healing was that of our baby daughter who appeared to have great difficulty in breathing. I was unable to contact a Christian Science practitioner, and a great fear gripped me, which I struggled to overcome by repeating the Lord's Prayer. These words stood out (Matt. 6:10): "Thy will be done." At once I realized the effect my fearful thinking was having on the baby. Turning wholeheartedly to God, I prayed (Science and Health, p. 17):
"Thy will be done in earth, as it is in
heaven.
Enable us to know,—as in heaven,
so on earth,—God is omnipotent,
supreme."
