The Universality of the Church of Christ, Scientist

From the July 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

That the power of God and His love are ever present and available to meet every need for everyone, no matter who he is or where he is, was graphically proven to a young engineer and his wife during their sojourn in a country prevalently atheistic some years ago. They had just begun the earnest study of Christian Science and were only superficially aware of the widespread activity of the Church of Christ, Scientist. This experience not only convinced them of the practicality of Christian Science but of the universality of its church.

Although inexperienced in the study and practice of Christian Science, these two had been impressed with the Tenets of Christian Science and "the scientific statement of being," given in the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. One of the sentences of this statement reads, "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." Science and Health, p. 468; They had accepted with childlike simplicity the fact of God's allness, that God is Spirit, that all He creates is spiritual, and that therefore matter is nothing.

Everything they saw and heard in that country continually belied this conviction. God was scorned with raucous voices and on huge posters; the dignity and individuality of man were denied; fear, poverty, lack of every kind were rampant. But they held to their Christianly scientific viewpoint— the oneness and allness of God, understood as divine Love and manifested and proclaimed through the Church of Christ, Scientist. They rejoiced that the reverse of the material picture was true. They declared that right where God was being rejected, the omnipresence, omnipotence, and omniscience of divine Spirit constituted the only reality, the only power, the only presence.
