Church Growth

From the December 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The growth of the Church of Christ, Scientist, is not massive, but it is steady, sure, and constant because it is built on the Rock, Christ. Its consistent growth emanates from a supreme cause whose energy is infinite, constant, unopposed by any real power, and certain of fulfillment. True church growth is not measured primarily in numbers but in the spiritual content of the thought and activity of individual church members.

As one compares the theology expounded in the Christian Church of 1865 with the theology expounded by the majority of sincere Christian theologians today, he realizes the startling change of thought that has occurred since the discovery of Christian Science by Mary Baker Eddy more than one hundred years ago.

Truly inspired reading of the Holy Scriptures, understanding healing prayer, and a discourse inspired by the Word of God have been the hallmarks of true religion throughout religious history. Consider Ezra, the scribe, when he read from the book of the law and inspired the people to turn to God and obey Him only. Consider Christ Jesus, our Way shower, when he read from the Holy Scriptures in the synagogues and when he preached his inspiring Sermon on the Mount. Through Jesus' teachings many people turned to God for healing, for supply, and for a more meaningful expression of brotherly love and obedience to God's law.
