The practice of Christian Science is the most important work in the world today. It fulfills the Master's injunction to his disciples "to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick." Luke 9:2;
Every sincere Christian Scientist is, in a sense, a practitioner. He is learning to meet head-on the onslaughts of mortal mind suggestion, to deny and nullify its claim to affect human experience. Even small children learn to practice the truths of spiritual existence. Yet when the thought of practice as a profession presents itself, the aggressive suggestions of lack of time, readiness, or willingness often hinder our accepting this challenging, progressive spiritual step.
The public practice of Christian Science belongs in a professional setting. It is widely recognized as a tried and respected healing method. Some insurance companies, local and state laws, and even the Federal Government of the United States have given active acceptance and recognition to the professional status of the Christian Science practitioner. Have we, as Christian Scientists, realized the extent of this progress? Since the public practice of Christian Science is a profession, the charges made for treatment must be in conformity with those of other practicing professionals. Unless we respect the office ourselves, and are ready to lift the standard to its proper level, we will not have started right.
