The True Idea of God

From the December 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When we use the word "Christ" to mean the true idea of God, more than just the right understanding of God is involved. The true idea is the actual expression of God. The difference lies between a merely intellectual explanation of God and the spirit of Truth and Love that heals. One is a matter of interpretation, the other a matter of demonstration. Christ is literally the emanation of divine Love that comes to human consciousness and transforms it. It is the activity of divine Principle that changes the elements of thought and restores the individual to wholeness.

Christ Jesus' insistence upon healing removed his teaching from the theoretical to the practical. It was the Word made flesh. His expression of the Christ gave substance and relevance to religion. It rebuked hypocrisy and ritual and demanded a change of thought and life. It demonstrated the presence and power of God. When we consider that Christ is the ideal man, we see that it is more than an interpretation of God; it is the very expression of His goodness, power, and love.

More than mere information, Christ, Truth, is a force, a divine impetus that regenerates and heals. It impresses mortals in different ways, depending upon their receptivity. To some, it comes as liberating love; to others, as a dawning revelation of Truth; and to still others it may come as the light that disturbs human consciousness because it uncovers and destroys evil.
