The great need today is for Christian Scientists to reach out into the community and spread widely the light of Christian Science. The early days of our movement were characterized by a crusading zeal to bring this wonderful healing light to humanity. The early workers made great sacrifices, faced formidable challenges, and triumphed over militant opposition.
Later a tendency developed for members to settle back and perhaps to consolidate, although Christian Science has continued to spread through the world, working its leavening influence on human thought. Today it seems to some outside the movement that we have built a defensive mentality around ourselves, and that we work from within this fortress of isolation. The times, however, demand that we reach out to all mankind and take hold of the immense opportunity that lies before us. Christ Jesus' command "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature" Mark 16:15 is just as imperative today.
Never was there a more urgent task. The world is ripe for Christian Science. Old-time faiths are in disarray, while multitudes are searching for a more relevant, meaningful, and practical religion. Psychology has shown in some degree the dominance of mind over matter. Although medicine is entrenching itself against the advancing age of spiritual healing, it is, at the same time, giving more and more emphasis to mental factors. World thought is feeling the breakthrough of divine Science.
