When Christian Science first came to my attention, I was a student in a hospital training school for nurses. While on vacation at the home of a relative, I was asked for my opinion of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. After reading a few pages of the book, I tossed it aside, advising her to avoid reading such nonsense.
After a few years Christian Science came again to my attention. This time I listened. I was directed to a practitioner, who urged me to procure the textbook and to read it with an unprejudiced mind if I wished to learn its healing message. In sincere humility I returned to the home of my relative and requested permission to borrow her book for a time. The permission was readily given, and with a silent prayer for an understanding heart, I opened the book at the first page and read in its entirety the first chapter, which is on Prayer. At the end of that time I was completely healed of blind prejudice and had gained a sense of joy and ineffable love that changed the entire course of my life—a change from servitude to false gods to reverent worship of the one and only God as revealed in Christian Science.
My first healing came early in my search for Truth. I was then nursing a medical case, although my study of Christian Science was deep and consecrated. One day I returned to my patient from a luncheon recess with all the alarming symptoms of food poisoning. An impulse to use the prescribed medical relief offered in such cases was instantly silenced, and I called a Christian Science practitioner, who said she would help me.
